Traffic Pattern Speeds

A

Downwind- 120 knots
Base- 110 knots
Final Approach- 100 knots

19
Q

Descent profile: 3 degree glideslope

A

Take your ground speed and multiply by 5, the result is your FPM to achieve a 3 degree glideslope.

Example: your approach speed is 120 knots. Multiply 120 x 5 = 600. 600 fpm is your descent rate for a 3 degree glideslope

20
Q

Descent profile: Descending from altitude

A

Take the amount of feet you need to descend and divide by 300. The result is the distance out that you need to start your descent.

Example: 41,000 ft MSL cruise, airport is at 2,000 ft MSL. Total descent 39,000 / 300 = 130. Start your descent 130 nm out.
