It shows Pips addiction towards his ‘destined lover’. A lover in which has never cared about his feelings or life or past. Pip is seen to have expectations for him and Estella, ones of which will never happen, and are only the twisted ideas in which miss Havisham has put into Pips mind

Pip is seen to be a much lower class that Estella, and she almost views him as just a spec of dirt. This makes Pip self-conscious about not only his own up brining and character, but also his own family .

Mist symbolizes his uncertainty, as one is unable to fully see in the mist, he is unable to fully see whether his actions are good or bad.

As a character, Pip’s two most important traits are his immature, romantic idealism and his innately good conscience.
How is Pip shown as kind
, Pip is at heart a very generous and sympathetic young man, a fact that can be witnessed in his numerous acts of kindness throughout the book (helping Magwitch, secretly buying Herbert’s way into business, etc.) and his essential love for all those who love him. Pip’s main line of development in the novel may be seen as the process of learning to place his innate sense of kindness and conscience above his immature idealism.
How is Pip portrayed as selfish and narrow sighted
His longing to marry Estella and join the upper classes stems from the same idealistic desire as his longing to learn to read and his fear of being punished for bad behaviour. Pip does not want to be poor, ignorant, or immoral. Pip the narrator judges his own past actions extremely harshly, rarely giving himself credit for good deeds.

Pip, unlike all the people around him, has a goal far out of reach, to become a gentleman, however, unlike teachers and clerks and blacksmiths, this goal is very subjective. If you can’t define it, it’s easy for someone else to tell you that you’re not one.

Pip’s great expectations just led to suffering—and growing up a little. Dreams may only bring suffering, but only suffering makes you a man.
