Q

What is the Scout Handshake?

A

Did you ever wonder why we shake hands when we meet someone? Offering someone our open hand is a gesture of friendship because it shows the other person our hand is free of weapons. But why do Scouts shake hands with their left hand rather than the right? Evidently the idea came from a legend B.-P. heard while he was in West Africa . Two neighbouring tribes were bitter enemies and always at war. One of the chiefs decided that the battles were harming both tribes, and needed to stop. When the opposing armies next confronted each other, the chief who wanted peace dropped his spear and shield, and advanced. Not only was the chief’s right hand empty of weapons to attack someone else, but his left hand did not hold a shield he could use to defend himself against the weapons of others. The defenseless chief said to his enemy, “I come unarmed and hold out my left hand to you as a sign of friendship and trust. We are neighbours and should not live as enemies. From now on we wish to live in peace, and we trust you to do the same and live in peace.” When B. –P. founded Scouts, he thought this gesture of friendship and trust would be an excellent one for Scouts to use. The Scout Handshake is made like a right handshake of greeting, except Scouts use their left hands. Show your friendship by reaching out your left hand and shaking someone else’s hand firmly, but warmly.

Q

What is the Scout Salute?

A

The Scout salute is a sign of respect, courtesy, and friendship. You use the salute as a sign of respect when the Canadian flag is “broken” at flag break, or when the flag passes by you in a parade. It’s also appropriate to use it when the national anthem is being played. You only make the Scout salute then you are wearing the FULL Scout uniform. To make the Scout salute, place the three fingers of your right hand as shown in the illustration. Bring your hand smartly up to your head until your forefinger touches your eyebrow with the palm of your hand facing forward. Then bring your hand smoothly down to your side.

Q

What is the Scout Sign?

A

To make the Scout sign, raise the three fingers of your right hand as you did for the salute. Hold your arm as shown in the illustration. The three fingers in the Scout salute and sign remind you of the three parts of the Scout Promise. Do you remember what they are? The meeting of your thumb and little finger represents the ties of friendship in Scouting.
You use the Scout sign, rather than the Scout salute, on four occasions.1/ When you are making your Scout Promise;2/When you are attending the investiture of another Scout;3/ When you are anywhere the Scout Promise is being recited; and 4/ When you are not in full uniform. If you are visiting another country and see someone wearing what you think is a Scout uniform, one way to find out if that person is part of the worldwide brotherhood of Scouting is to make the Scout sign. The Scout sign is a universal symbol and, if the person is a Scout, he or she will likely flash the sign back to you.
