19 years old - one of 3 guys who had continued on to find the Martin company. A cook. Didn’t think they would have him stay. Picks 19 other young men, put belongings in cabins and stay winter. Ran out of food after a few weeks. Cattle died and made them sick. Cooked leather and anything they possibly could. Bring everything in in the Spring.

A

Befriended Joseph Smith and saints during Nauvoo period. Chairman of senate committee on territories. Made call for “State of Deseret” to instead be “The Utah Territory”. Considered loyal friend to the church, spoke out against the Saints to gain favor with Iowa. Prophecy from JS to Douglas printed in the Deseret News. Prophecy said he would aspire to the president of the US, but if he lifted his hand against the LDSs, he would feel the weight of the Almighty upon him. Ran for president and was defeated by Abraham Lincoln in 1860.

A

Appointed “Indian Farmer” sent to quiet Indians. Indian camp tense between Indians and white men. Reported Mountain Meadow Massacre to BY. Tried twice for his involvement in the MMM. Eventually tried, convicted, and executed.

John Gunnison

A

Captain who lead topographical engineers to survey for TC Railroad. Attacked by angered Indians (because of death of one and injury of 2 from their tribe) and murdered along with 7 others. Well respected, brought a lot of grief. Americans in the East blamed it on the Mormon people.

Franklin D. Richards

A

mission president in England. Supports Willie and Martin Handcart companies coming out early despite Levi Savage’s advisement not to. Believed with the saints that if they had enough faith, the Lord would temper the elements. Individual who advised Brigham Young that the saints were still coming across the plains.

A

In 1820 when Missouri comes in state it becomes a slave state. Then a line was drawn to the west. Any land North of the line would be free, and the other slave.

Thomas L. Kane

A

Close friend of the Mormons, spoke with President Polk about UT being a territory. Recommended that Deseret apply for statehood and supported Brigham Young as being governor. Responsible for peaceful transfer of power as governor amid tensions between Utah and government during the Utah war. Visited with President Buchanan and urged him to send an investigation commission to Utah, was sent by Buchanan to try to achieve peaceful solution. Traveled to Camp Scott in poor health to visit with Alfred Cumming.

New US judge who tried to undermine LDS way of life. Took 1,000 soldiers with him to Provo to back up his work in court. One of the vices introduced to Utah as a result of army occupation.

James Buchanan

A

Pro popular sovereignty, democratic candidate running against John C. Fremont. Polygamy seen as popular sovereignty gone wrong. Becomes President of the US. Sends an army of 2000 out and vowed to replace Brigham Young as Governor because Democrats defensive about not being in favor of polygamy. Peace commission - Utah offered pardon if the saints would swear allegiance to the United States.

A

missionary in England, traveled with the companies heading west in 1847, with John Taylor as being in charge of immigrant company that followed after BY’s Pioneer Company.

A

Appointed as territorial secretary, but Young had already conducted a census (Harris’ job) before he arrived in Utah. Got ticked, accused BY of irregularities in the election, refused BY territorial seal and $24,000 for running government. Runaway official.

A

Colonel who is commanding the army who comes out against the saints. “Johnston’s army”. Winters in Camp Scott in the site of the burnt down Ft. Bridger. Establishes Camp Floyd.

A

Young becomes President of the church in December 1847. Chapter 26 mentions his Pioneer Company (mentioned below). Had revelation “The Work and Will of the Lord” that outlined how saints would move west and called them to have high moral character after the dissention of George Miller and others. Response to UT war: Put UT under martial law, called missionaries back home, Sent White Mountain Expedition to find another suitable place for settlement. Organized First Presidency to be able to send apostles to preach gospel (main duty). Reestablished the school of the prophets to help make economic decisions, encourage financial independence, purify meetings and minimize false doctrines. Created Deseret Alphabet.

One of the first to find the Martin handcart company, continued after 150 wagons had turned back.

Sam Brannan

A

Leader of Brooklyn Saints who sailed and settled in San Francisco. Created “The California Star” with printing press in CA. Met BY in WY and suggested settling the saints in CA (BY refused, CA was more desirable and the saints would possibly be pushed out). Brannan took word back that the saints would settle in the Great Basin, but for saints to come later because there weren’t enough crops yet. Brannan had no intention of leaving CA. Involved in embezzling tithing funds. He was the region’s first millionaire because of the gold rush, but lost it all. Apostatized because BY didn’t take his advice to settle in CA

Jim Bridger

A

Suggested settlement in Provo, Utah Valley area. Mountain man and trader. Supplied Ute Indians with guns because Salt Lake prosperity taking business of immigrants traveling through away from business at his fort. Ran away back to the East

Millard Fillmore

A

President that signed the bill that created the Utah territory (September 9, 1850). This occurred after the compromise of 1850, and the establishment of “Popular sovereignty”. “Fillmore, fearing that the Senate would not approve an all-Mormon state, compromised and selected four Mormons (Young, Snow, Blair, and Heywood) and four others to the federally appointed slots” (chapter 28). President was honored by the territory and Millard county was established.

A

Governor who comes out with the army escort and replaces Brigham Young (Result of UT War). Entered without militia force and was accepted with respect.

A

Helped move saints from Mississippi to Nauvoo in 1845. Led 43 to Missouri continuing on Oregon trail. Accidently missed Brigham Young at Winter Quarters, and ended up in Pueblo waiting. Stayed in Pueblo Colorado with Mississippi Saints and the sick from the Mormon battalion for the winter.

A

President of US 1854, refused entreaties of Utahns to reappoint BY as governor. Appointed Steptoe, who offered the position to many others, signed a petition for BY to be re-appointed, and reappointed BY after others declined.

A

Joseph Smith’s brother. When he hears that Mormons are applying for statehood, he writes a formal memorial to Congress about them taking an “oath of revenge” against the US government. Told congress not to let Mormons gain statehood.

Captain of the “Mormon Raiders”. Sent by BY to do everything short of bloodshed to slow down the army.

Fort Bridger

A

The main stop on the trail before Salt Lake City was established. Abandoned after Bridger supplied Ute indians with guns and then ran from saints. The saints burnt down the fort when the army came so as to deprive them of a resting spot.

Camp Scott

A

Where Ft. Bridger had been. Where American militia marching on UT stayed for the winter when they couldn’t make it across the plains. Ground around fort burned, starved 134/144 horses. (temporary establishment)

A

Camp established west of Utah Lake by military troops as part of peace commission AFTER the winter they spent at Camp Scott (this was a permanent place). 40 miles west of Provo and SLC.
