This is a picture of bucked shins.

“Bucked shins” are part of the disease complex known as dorsal metacarpal disease. Bucked shins is a painful, acute periostitis on the dorsal surface of the third metacarpal bone. It is seen most often in the forelimbs of young Thoroughbreds (2-yr-olds) in training and racing, and less commonly in Standardbreds and Quarter horses. Bucked shins may be the result of high-strain cyclic fatigue caused by excessive compression on a bone that has not remodeled enough to tolerate the stress placed on it. Stressed bone forms a new layer of bone at the point of stress. This new bone is weaker and, in the process of rapid bone formation, the periosteum becomes elevated and inflamed.

Q

T/F

This vertical skin wound has a better prognosis than a similar horizontal skin wound.

A

True

This is a full thickness teat laceration perforating the teat sinus.

Remember: more proximal = better blood supply = better prognosis

Vertical laceration = better prognosis

Knowing the Dx is abomasal volvulus, what is the prognosis for having a productive dairy cow following surgery?

A

Guarded to Poor

Prognosis is poor if the Cl- is low, which in this case it is. Normal range is 99-110 and this cows Cl is 71.

A) hereford

B) holstein

C) charolais

D) hereford-simmental crossbred

imaged is SCC of the eye.

angus least likely to get this because they have dark pigmentation around their face and eyes protecting them.

Q

This horse became entangled in barbed wire 6 wks previously. At the time of the injury the cannon bone was exposed. The skin wound has improved dramatically but failed to heal. The horse is lame 1 out of 5 at the trot. What is the most likely Dx at this point?

A) osteomyelitis

B) septic arthritis

C) exuberant granulation tissue

D) sequestrum

E) none of the above

A

D) sequestrum

option C would not cause a lameness.

option B is not possible since that means it would be a joint thats affected but this injury didnt involve a joint according to the description.

option A… it would take longer for that to occur? i dunno, i just think its least likely.

in my mind sequestrums are known to be part of non-healing wounds.
