Pilbeams Chapter 3 Flashcards
When the ventilator maintains the volume waveform and the volume and flow waveform remains unchanged.
What type of breathing is this called?
Volume-Controlled Breathing
When the ventilator controls the flow so therefore the volume and flow waveforms remain unchanged.
What type of breathing is this called?
Flow-Controlled Breathing
When the pressure, volume and flow waveforms are affected by changes in the patient’s lung characteristics.
What type of breathing is this called?
Time-Controlled Breathing
When the ventilator maintains the pressure waveform in a specific pattern.
What type of breathing is this called?
Pressure-Controlled Breathing
The mechanism that the ventilator uses to trigger inspiration.
The trigger variable
Inspiration can be any one of the following:
-Time triggered
-Patient triggered
-Volume triggered
Phase Variables
- Trigger variable begins inspiration
- Limit variable limits the pressure, volume flow or time but does not end inspiration.
- Cycle variable ends the inspiratory phase.
- Baseline variable is the end expiratory-expiratory baseline before a breath is triggered (usually pressure).
How can you tell if there is patient effort occurring on the waveform?
There will be a negative deflection from the baseline.
Flow triggering
When the ventilator detects a drop in flow during exhalation.
Volume triggering
When the ventilator detects a drop in volume during exhalation.
The Limit Variable
The maximum value that a variable can attain.
(Volume, pressure, flow or time)
This is used to increase peripheral distribution of gas and improve oxygenation.
Inflation or Inspiratory Hold
What can happen if the expiratory time is too short?
Air trapping and hyperinflation can occur leading to auto-PEEP or intrinsic PEEP.
How can the auto-PEEP be measured?
Expiratory hold
How is auto-PEEP displayed graphically on a flow-curve?
Auto-PEEP is present if the flow does not return to zero when a new mandatory ventilator breath begins.
This function on the ventilator mimics pursed lip breathing, this adds a degree of resistance to exhalation.
Expiratory Retard
