Pigs GI infections (Yr 3) Flashcards
what bacteria can cause GI disease in pigs?
Lawsonia intracellularis
Brachyspira
E. coli
Clostridium spp.
Salmonella enterica
Campylobacter
what does Lawsonia cause?
porcine proliferative enteritis
haemorrhagic bowel syndrome
what cause porcine proliferative enteritis and haemorrhagic bowel syndrome?
Lawsonia
what pigs does porcine proliferative enteritis usually occur in?
finishers
what are the typical clinical signs of porcine proliferative enteritis and haemorrhagic bowel syndrome?
porcine proliferative enteritis bloody diarrhoea and sudden death
haemorrhagic bowel syndrome thinning and haemorrhage of ileal walls typically without diarrhoea
what does E. coli cause in pigs?
neonatal scour
post weaning diarrhoea
oedema disease
what cause oedema disease?
shiva-like toxins from E. coli
what is the pathogenies of oedema disease?
shiga-like toxins damage blood vessels and endothelial cells leading to oedema (especially in face and eyelids)
what age is oedema disease seen?
post-weaning pigs
what does C. novyi cause?
systemic infection typically of outdoor reared sows leading to necrotic lesions of liver due to migration of bacteria form the gut (aero chocolate appearance)
can salmonella be vaccinated for?
no
what are some viral GI disease?
rotavirus
coronavirus
porcine circovirus
what is the pathogenesis of rotavirus?
intestinal epithelial cells infected leading to damage to villus causing enteritis and scour
what does coronavirus cause in pigs?
porcine epidemic diarrhoea and transmissible gastroenteritis
what does porcine circovirus cause?
post weaning multi systemic wasting syndrome
