Pigs Flashcards
What causes vegetative valvular endocarditis?
Erysipelix
or strep suis
What is the treatment for Erysipelothrix (diamond disease) ?
Penicillin
prevention/ control - sanitation and vaccination
- tends to be seen more in Summer (hot weather)
- vacc pre-breeding sows and gilts
- weaning - maternal interference so have to wait til post weaning
What does Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae cause in pigs?
Septicaemia
1. diamond skin
2. Arthritis, chronic form
3. Endocarditis
4. Abortion
What causes Glasser’s Disease (Polyserositis)?
Haemophilis parasuis
- a gram -ve cocobacillus
What are the main findings in pigs with Glasser’s dz?
Sudden death of healthy pigs
Polyserositis/ septicaemia (fibrosus)
- pleuritis, pericarditis, peritonitis, meningitis
What treats Glasser’s disease (Polyserositis)?
Penicillin
Tetracyclines
Ceftiofur
Enro
PCR to diagnose
T/F: Salmonella typhimurium is zoonotic
True
Purple discolouration in pigs e.g. ear tip necrosis indicated what?
septicaemia - usually a finding in Salmonella spp.
How do you treat Salmonella spp in pigs?
Neomycin in feed/water for whole group
Ceftiofur for individuals
Florfenicol in feed/water
PRRS - Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome is caused by what?
Anterivirus
What is the most important significant disease in commercial piggery’s in the US/ worldwide?
PRRS
Clinical signs associated with PRRS
neonates
- anorexia, lethary, fever
- cyanosis of the ears, resp distress
- 2’ bacterial pneumonia
- delayed or abnormal estrus with increase stillborns/mummies / abortions
PCVAD - Porcine circovirus associated disease is also known as ?
Porcine wasting syndrome - a relatively new disease caused by porcine circovirus type 2
wasting in early finisher pigs
high mortality
enlarged peripheral LNs
evidence of pneumonia
ddx at necropsy
Vaccs extremely effective!!
What is pseudorabies?
Caused by herpes \virus
also known as Aujesky’s disease
can affect pigs, dogs, cats, domestic animals
not humans
ERADICATED IN 2004 in commercial swine So is REPORTABLE
What clinical signs are seen in baby piglets affected by pseudorabies?
up to 100% mortality
neurological dz, vomiting, diarrhoea
ulcers on oral cavity and esophagus
as pigs get older mortality lessens. Adults often inapparent but can cause stillbirth/abortion.
