What is a ‘diastema’?
Gap in the teeth between incisors and cheek teeth in both the pig and the cow.
What is a ‘heterodont’?
An animal which has various specialised teeth. E.g. Pig and cow.
What is meant by ‘dihypodont’?
When an animal develops a set of deciduous teeth which fall out and are replaced by permanent teeth. E.g. Cow and pig.
What is the dental formulae of the pig?
Deciduous: (Upper 3-1-4 + Lower 3-1-4) x 2 = 32 teeth
Permanent: (Upper 3-1-4-3 + Lower 3-1-4-3) x 2 = 44 teeth
What is the dental formulae of the cow?
Deciduous: (Upper 0-0-3 + Lower 4-0-3) x 2 = 20 teeth
Permanent: (Upper 0-0-3-3 + Lower 4-0-3-3) x 2 = 32 teeth
What are the characteristics of the pigs teeth?
- Canine teeth are called tusks
- Tusks are open rooted
- Lower tusks are larger than upper tusks
- Premolars smaller than molars
- Molars flat surface area and used for grinding food
What are the characteristics of the cows teeth?
- Brachydont incisors on bottom
- Hard dental pad instead of upper incisors
- No canines
- Break grass rather than cut it
- Chew from side to side
