The Rook (Castle)
A
Moves any number of squares, but only forward, backward or sideways.

The Bishop (Mr. Pointy Head)
A
Moves diagonally any number of squares.

The Knight (Horsie)
A
Moves in an “L” shape (two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular.) The Knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces.

The Pawn
A
Moves forward one square at a time, but captures pieces by moving diagonally. On its first move, a pawn can move forward two squares.

The Queen
A
Moves any number of squares in a straight line (up, down, sideways or diagonally.)

The King
A
Moves one square in any direction. You can’t move the King into a position where it could be captured.
