Piano development Flashcards
Name of Manufacturer
Streicher, Fritz, Anton Walter, Stein ( (Viennese) then later came Broadwood (English action due to concerts popular in England already 1760) and Erad (double escapement)
Viennese pianos
Small hammer with leather connected to lever so light responsive, lacked dynamics, every string damped for crisp sound but lacked sustaining power (knee lever rarely used), parallel strung (hands same volume), thinner strings 1/10 tension, 5 8ves ish
English pianos
Broadwood introduced English heavier action for louder sound, hands no longer same balance, dampers weren’t as good (none top register)
Newer Pianos
Steinway and Bechstein started in 1853, cross strung muddier sound but much greater volume
