Piano Flashcards
Personal experience as Lawrence listens to a woman singing. It conjures up the memories of his mother. Metaphor
a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years
Imagery of a childhood memory. Lawrence was under the piano as his mother played the piano. Seems to be a positive image filled with music. Positive, selcoming image of mother. Onomatopoeia & Sibilance
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.
The memories seem to cause him pain. He doesn’t want to relive them.
In spite of myself
The true power of music
the insidious mastery of song
His memories take over and thrust Lawrence back to the time when his mother was alive. When he had a home and a place to belong. His own emotions and memories seem to be against him. Converts to simple language that a child would use
Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong
To the old Sunday evenings at home
His house was filled with music, giving it an open and homely vibe. Soft sounds make it easy on the ear like music
hymns in the cosy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide.
He no longer hears the original singer because he is overwhelmed by emotion and grief. The music is no longer for him but just the woman singing
now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour
Lawrence is lost in his memories and cannot escape. His childhood still plays a major part in his life
The glamour
Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast
Down in a flood of remembrance
He shows true emotion which was very unusual for that time as men were ‘supposed’ to not shows what they are were feeling. Simile. He is mourning for the past.
I weep like a child for the past.
