piagets stages of cognitive development Flashcards
what is cognitive development
child’s ability to learn and solve problems
what is the sensorimotor stage
0-2, infants learn about their environment and develop early schemas by using their sense, e.g. taste and touch
what is the pre-operational stage
2-7, children begin to control their environment and development by using symbolic behaviour, including symbolic play.
what is symbolic play
when a child uses an object to represent another item or thing, e.g. using a lam to represent the sun.
what is the concrete operational stage
7-11, children use practical resources to help them understand the world e.g. counters for maths. they use logic to understand things they see.
what is ego-centrism
when a child only sees from their own perspective.
what is the formal operational stage
11-18, young people have the capacity for abstract thought, rational thought and problem solving.
what are the critics
