Q

strength practical application

A

his theory can be applied to teaching- old classrooms children sat in rows copying the board- now been changed to activity oriented classrooms that allows them to construct their own knowledge of the curriculum. Flipped learning used in accordance with Piaget theory of cognitive development. Helpful for education.
However, people learn differently so it may not benefit everyone and it’s all facilitated by the teacher and not very independent.

Q

strength supporting study
Cristine Howe

A

did study on children ages 9-12 where they were placed into groups of 4 to investigate/ discuss movements of objects down a slope- strength because the children’s understanding increased but each child picked up different facts and reached slightly different conclusions showing individual learning.
However, study is not generalisable as its only done on 9-12 year old therefore low population validity.

Q

weakness no firm evidence

A

No firm evidence that children learn better using discovery learning- in a recent review Lozonder and Hermsen found that discovery learning with a considerable input from teachers was the most effective way to learn input from others is crucial- proves independent learning isn’t as effective and therefore children don’t learn independently.

Q

weakness underestimated the role of others in learning

A

Piaget may have underestimated the role of others in learning- he saw learning as an individual process- contrasts with other theories such as Vygotskys that says individuals help aid learning of which there is strong evidence to support this. Ignores for example teachers and parents importance.
