piaget’s theory of cognitive development Flashcards
What is cognitive development
The way all cognitive processes change and develop throughout human lifespan
What is biological maturation?
The effects of biological process of aging, as children get older, certain mental operations become possible, the key to how children’s thinking changes
What is discovery learning?
How children engage and interact with their environment to understand more about the world
What does the mechanism of cognitive development include?
Schema, then assimilation, then accommodation, then equilibrium
What is the schema?
Cognitive frameworks that contain our knowledge and understanding of objects, people or ideas
What is assimilation?
The process of incorporating new information into an existing schema
What is accommodation?
Child changes or creates or adapted an existing schema to understand new information that doesn’t seem to fit into existing knowledge
What is equilibration?
The preferred mental state, individual has escaped disequilibrium (unpleasant lack of unbalance) and is now in a comfortable state
What is disequilibrium?
A state that the individual undergoes after going through assimilation
An example of the the MOCD process
Student assimilates information in a lesson, in a state of disequilibrium, undergoes accommodation by revising/praticing, finally in a state of equilibrium
