piaget's theory of cognitive development Flashcards
jean piaget
-how children think, learning and navigating the world
-generate a hypthoseis and test it through interacting with their environment
schema
-some are innate (from birth)
-become more better with time + experience
-have our own unique schema
the motivation to learn
-originates from unpleasant motions
disequilibrium
-when our current understanding doesn’t match the info presented to us
equilibrium
-explore our environment to improve our understanding of a scenario
assimilation
new and not radical info that we incorporate into our schema
accommodation
new and radical info that we have to form a new schema for
strength - supporting evidence (howe et al, 1992)
-Piaget = everyone will form a unique view of the world
-put children into groups to discuss the movement and they will give different facts
-each formed their own schema
weakness - opposing theories
-piaget underestimates role of others
-likens humans to scientists
-can’t learn everything independently
-vygotsky says that learning is a social process
strength - real world application
-pre-1960s = learning passive and silent
-Piaget introduced discovery based learning e.g. peer-learning
-teacher is a facilitator (allows things to happen/flow)
HOWEVER - only works with reading/english and not maths/science
weakness - unrepresentative sample & culture bias
-predominately white, middle-class and from well-educated families (bias)
-children from poor backgrounds have fewer opportunities
-can’t explain the cognitive development of all children
