Piaget's stages of intellectual development Flashcards

1
Q

What is the first stage and at what age does this occur

A
  • sensorimotor stage (0-2)
  • this is when a baby develops some basic physical co-ordination
  • they also learn that ppl are separate objects and must be oppressed- i mean baby knows to develop it’s language to communicate
  • by around 8 months baby understands object permanence

Q

What is the second stage

A
  • pre-operational stage (2-7)
  • conservation; basic mathematical understanding that quantity remains constant even when it’s appearance of objects change
  • egocentrism; meaning to see the World from only ones own point of view
  • class inclusion; understanding that objects fall into categories

Q

How did Piaget demonstrate conservation

A
  • placed 2 identical rows of counters side by side, when one of the rows of counters was pushed more closely together or further apart children in the po stage struggled to conserve and usually said there were fewer counters, he also had a liquid conservation procedure

Q

How did Piaget and Inhelder demonstrate egocentrism

A
  • Piaget + Inhelder demonstrated egocentrism in the 3 mountain task
  • children were shown three dumbass model ugly lookin ass mountains, each with a different feature
  • doll was placed on the side of the model so that it faced the scene from a different angle, the dumbass child was then asked what the doll would see from a range of pictures, kids in this stage found it difficult and chose pictures that presented what they see

Q

How did Piaget and Inhelder demonstrate class inclusion

A
  • showed children a picture of a weird ass dog and two filthyass cats and asked them ‘are there more dogs or animals in this picture’ the kids responded with dogs showing their brains are undeveloped and stoopid
  • this is because kids did not class dogs and animals in the same category

Q

What is the third stage

A
  • concrete operational (7-11)

- children still struggle to reason about abstract ideas and to imagine objects or situations they cannot see

Q

What is the fourth stupid stage

A
  • formal operational (11+)
  • children are capable of formal reasoning
  • formal reasoning was tested by Smith et al, when they said ‘all yellow cats have two head, i have a cat named charlie puth, how many heads does this motherfucker have?’ child usually became distracted by the two heads part

Q

Outline McGarrigle and Donaldson’s study showing that Piaget was wrong about conservation in the pre-operational stage

A
  • in a control condition they replicated the standard Piaget task with 4-6 year olds and found most children answered incorrectly lol
  • however when a ‘naughty teddy’ appeared and knocked the counters close together 62% correctly said there were the sae number as before
  • this suggest children 4-6 years of age could conserve as long as they weren’t put off by the question

Q

Outline Hughes study

A
  • tested the ability of children to see a situation from two ppls viewpoints using a model with two intersecting walls and 3 dolls, a boy and two police officers
  • once familiarised with the task, children as young as 3 1/2 years were able to position the boy doll where one police officer could not see him 90% of the time
  • suggesting Piaget underestimated children’s ability to decentre
