Piaget's stages of Intellectual Development Flashcards
Sensorimotor Stage (0-2)
Physical sensations and coordination between what they see and body movement
Understanding of other people being separate objects
Understanding that objects still exist when they are out of sight
Pre-Operational Stage (2-7)
Egocentrism was tested (3 mountain task) - 3 model mountains with 3 different features; cross, house, snow
Class inclusion is tested (more dogs or animals?) - shows that children under 8 reply with “dog”
Concrete Operational Stage (7-11)
Children have now mastered conversation and are improving on egocentrism and class inclusion
HOWEVER…
They are only able to reason/operate on physical objects in their presence
Formal Operation Stage (11+)
Children are now able to think beyond the here and now
They can now focus on the form of an argument and not be distracted by its content - Syllogisms
