What are Piaget’s stages of development?
Sensorimotor stage, pre-operational stage, concrete operational stage, formal operational stage.
What is a schema?
Mental pockets of organised information.
What is the difference between assimilation and accommodation?
Assimilation adds information to an existing schema, accommodation creates a new schema for new information.
What skills are developed in the pre-operational stage?
Object permanence, animism, egocentrism.
What skills are developed in the concrete operational stage?
Decentration, reversibility, conservation.
What are some criticisms of Piaget’s theory?
Too reductionist, ignores role of nurture, doesn’t necessarily apply to all children.
What is decentration?
The ability to deal with two pieces of information at the same time.
