What is assimilation?
Using an existing Schema to deal with a new object or situation
What is accommodation?
When the existing Schema does not work, and needs to be changed to deal with a new object or situation.
What is equilibration?
Th force that moves development along.
What age is sensorimotor?
Birth-2
What are the 6 sub stages of sensorimotor?
Simple reflexes Primary circular reactions Secondary circular reactions Coordination of secondary circular reaction Tertiary circular reactions Internalisation of schemas
About simple reflexes
Birth to 1 month
Characterised by reflexes such as sucking or rooting
Primary circular reactions
1-4 months
Infants learn to coordinate sensations.
An infant tries to reproduce an even that accidentally happened. Ie. Sucking thumb
Secondary circular reactions
4-8 months
Children become aware of own body.
More object orientated
Coordination of secondary reflexes
8-12 months.
Start to show intentionality- using a stick to reach something
Tertiary circular reactions
12-18 months.
Start to think of new possibilities for objects
Internalisation of schemas
18-24 months.
A shift to symbolic thinking
Preoperational.
2-7 years. Language skills develop rapidly. Classify objects by a single feature. Egocentric. Animism- human attributes to inanimate objects.
