Phytotomy Flashcards
What is the male organ of a flower?
The stamen
What is included in the stamen?
The anther and the filament
What is the female organ of a flower?
The pistil
What is included in the pistil?
The stigma, the style, the ovary, and the ovules
What is a receptacle?
The thicker part of a stem at the base of the flower which contains major organs.
What is a peduncle?
The stem of a flower
What is a sepal?
Small, leaf-like parts which grow at the base of the flower. It is meant to protect a flower before blossoming.
What is the purpose of petals?
Attracts insects, increasing odds of pollination
Identify the stages of fertilization in flowers.
The stigma, head of the pistil, receives pollen. It will go into the style, where compatible pollen will produce pollen tubes. This effectively filters out incompatible pollen. Pollen reaches the base of the pistil, the ovary. The ovules, which are in the ovary, will develop into a seed. In fruit plants, it’ll grow flesh too.
What is the purpose of the filament?
Connects the anther to the petals
What is the purpose of the anther?
Lone producer of pollen
