Phytoplankton (plant) Flashcards
6 main types of Phytoplankton
Phylum:
Euglenophyta
Pyrrophyta
Chrysophyta
Chlorophyta
Rhodophyta
Phaeophyta
unicellular phyla
Euglenophyta
Pyrrophyta (diatoms)
Chrysophyta (dinoflagellates)
multicellular phyla
Chlorophyta (green)
Rhodophyta (red)
Phaeophyta (brown)
Phytoplankton
-start of plant like food chain
-all autotrophs with chlorophyl
-produce oxygen
multicellular do not have roots stems and leaves
Phylum Euglenophyta
-uni
ex) Euglena
-animal and plant characteristics
-photosynthesis, cant then hunts
moves 2 food with flagellum
Diatoms (phylum Bacillariophyta)
-uni
shells made of silical
-dead shells used for tooth n metal polishes, sparkles, pavement lines
-make oil 2 float 2 get light
-give fish oily taste
Phylum Pyrrophyta (dinoflagellates)
-uni
-cause red tide
-2 flagella and spin 2 move
-some bioluminescent
Phylum Rhodophyta (red algae)
-multi
-body is thallus
live below 100m bcuz of adapted photosynthesis
-in sushi
thallus
no roots no stems no leaves body
Phylum Phaeophyta (brown algae)
-air bladders move em 2 sunlight
-in shallow areas
-makes slimy so dont dry out
ex) kelp - largest
