physiotherapy and occupational therapy Flashcards
what is physiotherapy?
a profession that aims to help restore movement and function when someone is affected bu injury illness or disability
may enable people to stay in work
CSP 2013
what aspects are a features of physiotherapy assessment?
respiratory
tone
power
ROM
sensation/proprioception
pain
postural analysis
balance reactions
transfer mobility and stairs
what is occupational therapy?
the purpose of OT is to enable people to fulfil or work towards fulfilling their potential as occupational beings (COT 2009)
what are the components of OT asssessment?
muscle power, range, sensation and tone relation to function and recovery
ability to walk and transfer (ie out of bath, off toilet)
ability to complete self care tasks
ability to complete kitchen and household tasks
ability to process information effectively
ability to access the community environment
what additional assessments are features of OT?
social/home environment
Activites of Daily Living
mental capacity
cognitive abilities
respiratory physiotherapy in neurological disorders
neurodegenerative disorders have a high risk of respiratory complications
bulbar weakness- aspiration
respiratory weakness
reduced mobility
postural changes
what are the aims of respiratory physiotherapy?
assist clearance of sputum
reduce work of breathing
maximise ventilation
increase lung volumes
how does cough assist work and what can it be used for?
1) positive pressure to expand lungs
2) rapid shift to negative pressure
loosening upper resp tract secretions
cough replacement
what OT interventions are used for tonal management?
stretches- maintain ROM
tilt table: hypotehesised to improve weight bearing
studies in healthy subjects have shown functional residual capacity
positionining techniques
what physio techniques are used for tonal management
splinting: ie ankle , wrist
promote recovery, maintain function, prevent contractures
describe cueing in parkinsons
use of external temporal or spacial stimuli to initiate and continue movement
bypasses basal ganglia
describe the OTs role of fall interventions
identify reason: medication, medical issues, physical abilities, cognition, sensation etc.
gait re-education, balance rehab
compensatory techniques ie backward chaining, alarm pendents
describe cognitive assessment and intervention in OT
standardised screens:
MOCA, ACE
standardised assessments: TEA
intervention: functional skills training.
pen and paper tasks
goal setting in physiotherapy
NSF for neurological long term conditions states that treatment should be patient centred
SMART goals:
Specific
measurable
achievable
realistic
timescale
what are some of the principles of discharge
MDT
are they medically fit?
ie can they move around safely
do they need further inpatient rehab?
is the patient’s home suitable
