Physiotherapy Flashcards
When is a person permitted to give treatment?
provider is 18+
provider is acting under the direction of a qualified person
Why is physiotherapy used?
reduce pain
promote healing process
increases and maintains normal muscle strength and joint flexibility
promote and restore normal movement patterns
increase cardiovascular fitness
When are patients subjective to physiotherapy?
post-operative soft tissue injuries obese conservatively managed geriatric working/sporting/racing neurological recumbent patients
Which effects does cold therapy give?
reduce pain decrease spasm reduces metabolism reduces blood flow lower inflammation reduces oedema
which effects does heat therapy give?
reduces pain decrease spasm increase metabolism increase blood flow increase inflammation increase oedema
What are the properties of massage?
use with sub-acute and chronic tissue repair
improves muscle circulation
improves lymphatic drainage
releases endorphins- pain relief
facilitates normal interchange of fluid and gases between tissues
bonding
what are contraindications for massage?
dehydration haemorrhage infection persistent pain skin infections abdominal pain aggressive animals
What are the properties of effleurage?
increases blood flow reduces oedema calming effect before and after exercise circular stroking movement with the palm of hand
What are the properties of petrissage?
improves circulation and lymph flow reduces muscle spasms prevent/break down adhesions removal of chemical by-products of inflammation sensory stimulation kneading and rolling massage
What are the properties of passive range of motion?
sub-acute and chronic phases of tissue repair
movement performed without muscle contraction using
external force to move the joint
after joint surgery
prevents joint contracture and soft tissue adaptive shortening, maintaining mobility
reduces pain and enhances blood flow
will not prevent muscle atrophy, increase strength, improve endurance or improving blood and lymph flow
