Physiology of vision Flashcards
Which cells are involved in the pathway of vision?
Photoreceptors
Bipolar cells
Ganglion cells
With Horiontal and Amacrine cells in between
What do horizontal cells do?
Receive inpur from photoreceptors and project to other photoreceptors and bipolar cells
What do amacrine cells do?
Receive input from bipolar cells and project to ganglion cells, bipolar cells and other amacrine cells
Basis of phototransduction?
Photoreceptors have a depolarised rmp
Light exposure causes hyperpolarisation
What is visual acuity?
Ability to distinguish two nearby points
What is receptive field?
The part of the retina that needs to be stimulated to elicit action potentials from a ganglion cell
What are the four different photoreceptor types in the human retina?
Short wave- Blue
Medium wave- green
Long wave- red
Rods
features of rods
Peripheral retina
High convergence
High light sensitivity
Low visual acuity
Features of cones?
Central retina
Low convergence
Low light sensitivity
High visual acuity
