Physiology Flashcards
What is the nephron?
The functional unit of the kidney
Which arterioles take the blood to and from the glomerulus?
Afferent takes it towards
Efferent takes it away
What happens once it has gone through the glomerulus?
Goes through the tubules then to minor calyx, major calyx, renal pelvis and ureter
What comes off the efferent arteriole?
Blood vessels that then run along side the tubules called intertubular capillaries
What are the layers of the filtration system?
Vascular endothelium
Glomerular basement membrane
Podocytes
What is the space in a glomerulus called?
Bowman’s space
What cells are on the tubular side of the filtration, and not part of the filter?
Mesangial cells
How long are kidneys?
8-9cm
Which kidney is lower?
Right due to liver pushing it down
Where are the nephrons in a medulla?
Cortex
How big is the cortex?
1cm
Can become thinner in CKD
How is the medulla organised?
In pyramids separated by renal columns
How many nephrons in a kidney?
1,000,000
What are the two types of nephrons?
Cortical - lay mainly in cortex
Juxtamedullary - closer to medullar with long loop in medulla
What are the parts of the nephron?
Corpuscle
Tubular
Vascular
