Physiology Flashcards
What is haemoglobin?
A red protein that is responsible for transporting oxygen to the blood
(Molecule comprises of 4 subunits)
What is oxyhaemoglobin?
A red substance formed by the combination of haemoglobin and oxygen (in oxygenated blood)
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Releases hormones that accelerate the heart rate (s for speed up)
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Releases hormones to slow the heart rate down (para for paralysed)
What do chemoreceptors do?
Detect the changes of carbon dioxide levels in the blood (c for carbon)
What do baroreceptors do?
They detect changes of blood pressure levels in the heart
What do the proprioceptors do?
They detect changes in the position or movement of the body
What order is the cardiac conduction system?
Sinoatrial node (SA) Atrioventricular node (AV) Bundle of his Bundle of branches Purkinye fibres
S A B B P
What is myoglobin?
It is the oxygen and iron binding protein found in the muscle tissue
