physiology Flashcards
lymphatic load
the amount of fluid that needs to be transported
transport capacity
amount of lymphatic fluid that can be transported
imbalance between load and capacity is bad,
Load will increase as capacity decreases this will lead to…
lymphedema
Venous insufficiency:
↑ load → ↑ lymphedema
Lymph nodes removed:
↓ capacity → ↑ lymphedema
U/L edema
deep vein thrombosis (DVT), lymphedema, post-thrombotic syndrome, arthritis,
Baker cyst
B/L edema:
congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), lipedema,
renal and hepatic dysfunctions
lymphedema
Chronic disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of lymph fluid in tissues of
one or more body regions
Lymphedema is considered to be present if>10% increase compared to unaffected side
➤ Associated with disturbances of water and protein (increased concentrations of
both)
Primary lymphedema
congenital or hereditary disease (Milroy disease)
Hypoplasia: fewer lymphatic vessels and smaller than normal
Hyperplasia
Aplasia
Secondary lymphedema
is acquired,
Injury to one or more components of the lymph system
Causes
⚬ In the United States: cancer (breast, cervical)
⚬ Surgery (lymph node removal = lymphadenectomy), radiation, CVI,
tumors, trauma (burns, wounds), infection, complex regional pain syn-
drome (CRPS) (disuse)
⚬ Outside of the United States → filariasis (mosquito-born)
