Physics Y11 Term 1 Flashcards
What equation links density, mass and volume?
Density = mass/volume
What is an eureka can used for?
To measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object using displacement in water.
What happens to the temperature of a substance when it changes state? why?
The temperature stays the same as the energy is used for changing state instead of increasing or decreasing.
What is the definition of the temperature of a substance?
The temperature of a substance is the average kinetic energy of the particles in the substance.
What is boiling?
Boiling occurs throughout a liquid at its boiling point, hence lots of bubbles coming from everywhere in the liquid.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation occurs only from the surface and happens at much lower temperatures than boiling.
What is internal energy?
The sum of total kinetic energy and potential energy.
Which state has the most internal energy?
Solid.
What is potential energy?
Stored energy.
What is kinetic energy?
Movement energy.
Why is changing state a physical reaction and not a chemical reaction?
Changing state is reversible and the material is the same after the state change.
What is specific latent heat?
The energy required to change the state of one kilogram of a substance/material.
What is specific latent heat of fusion?
Changing solid to liquid or liquid to solid.
What is specific latent heat of vaporisation?
Changing liquid to gas or gas to liquid.
When is specific latent heat used?
When the state of a substance/material is changing state.
