Physics - Waves Flashcards
What is the ‘crest’ of a wave?
The height/top of the wave
What is the trough of a wave?
The lowest point/dip of the wave
What is the amplitude?
The amplitude is the distance between the crest(or trough), to the centre line.
What is a wave length?
A wavelength is the term given to the distance between two waves (trough to trough, crest to crest etc.)
What is meant by a period when considering ‘waves’?
The time in which it takes for one oscillation to occur
Define frequency
The number of waves per second
What is the highest point of the wave called?
Crest
True or false; A period is the amount of waves per second?
False. A frequency is the amount of waves in a second.
What is a transverse wave?
A wave in which the vibrations run perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
What is the term given to the distance between the crest(or trough) to the centre line on a wave?
The amplitude
Describe the pattern/movement of the direction of oscillation
The direction of oscillation is parallel to the direction of motion
What is the distance between two waves called?
A wavelength
