physics vocab Flashcards
example of resonance
singer breaking a wine glass
driving force = singer
effect = glass breaks
resonance
when the driving frequency is equal to the natural frequency and as a result maximum amplitude of oscillation is reached
damping
effects that remove energy from a system, e.g. friction
forced oscillation
external driving force is applied to cause something to oscillate at a specific frequency - amplitude depends on the driving force
free oscillation
a pendulum or a mass-spring system is left to vibrate at its natural frequency
isochronous oscillator
the period of a simple harmonic oscillator is independent to its amplitude
simple harmonic motion
acceleration of an object towards the equilibrium is directly proportional to its displacement from equilibrium
centripetal force
any force that keeps a body moving with uniform speed along a circular path that is perpendicular to the velocity of an object
angular velocity
rate of change of angle
radian
SI unit for angle
angle subdued by a circular arc with a length equal to the radius of the circle
2 pi = 360
