Physics Unit Flashcards
How fast is the plane moving in respect to the ground?
Wind head on to plane- you subtract
Plane going forward, wind going to the right- a2+ b2= c2
What happens when acceleration is zero?
State of mechanical equilibrium
All forces acting on the object are canceled out
Zero acceleration does not mean zero velocity
What is Newton’s first law?
Every material object continues in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled to change that state by a force impressed upon it
Law of inertia
Kicking a stand still ball
What is the free fall formula?
Acceleration due to the gravity formula
D=1/2gt2
Gravity= 9.8ms2 or 32ft/s2
What is a vector?
An arrow representing velocity
Length= speed of object Direction= direction of motion
What is velocity?
Speed plus direction
What is mass?
Measure of the quantity of matter
1KG= 9.8 Newton’s
What is Newton’s 3rd law?
Whenever an object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts and equal and opposite force on the first
Action- reaction
What is inertia?
The tendency of things to resist changes in motion
What is a force?
A push or pull
Gravitational, electrical, magnetic, muscle effort
A force is anything that accelerated an object
How do you find the acceleration?
Change in velocity divided by the change in time
What is Speed?
Types of Speed?
Distance traveled divided by the time elapsed. S=D/T
Instantaneous Speed: speed at any specific instance. Speedometer
Average Speed: total distance covered divided by time elapsed
Avg. Speed= total distance/ total time
What is Newton’s 2nd Law?
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on the object and inversely proportional to its mass
A=F/M
More force= more acceleration
Objects free falling— what happens?
F=MA so A=F/M
A more massive object will have a greater attraction to the earth but because of inertia will speed up slower
A less massive object will have a smaller attraction to the earth but will speed up faster
Both will hit the ground at the same time
Who founded the law of gravitation?
How did that happen?
Issac Newton
Apple fell from tree, initial calculations didn’t work, places theory in drawer for 20 years, when comet of 1670 came Halley convinced him to relook at it, produced the law of gravitation
What is the formula for the Law is Universal Gravitation?
F~ m1m2/ d2
F= Gx m1m2/ d2
G= 6.67 x 10-11 N m2/kg2
Universal Gravitation constant?
G= 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2/kg2
Equals the force of attraction between two 1KG masses 1 meter apart
What are Spring Tides?
Higher than average tides and lower than average tides
Are when the sun, moon, and earth are lined up
What is a Neap Tides?
High tides lower than average, and low tides higher than average
When the moon is half way been a new moon and a full moon
In projectile motion, what equation do you use for horizontal movement?
d= v x t
