Physics Trimester 3 Final Review Flashcards
What are the 2 main classifications of waves?
- Mechanical
- Electromagnetic
Why do we use the term “propagate” to describe wave movement?
We use propagate instead of travel or move since waves don’t waves simply travel from place to place (they spread out)
Transverse Waves
Oscillate perpendicular to the direction of propagation
Longitudinal Waves
Oscillating motion causing the waves is parallel to the direction of the propagation
Circular Waves
Mainly repressed by the waves on water
List and describe the 5 main waves phenomena:
- Reflection- reflect off surface of objects
- Refraction- the change in direction of waves
- Diffraction- occurs when waves bend around
- Resonance- occurs when two different waves
- Interference: occurs when two different waves arrive at the same place at the same time
List and describe 3 types of seismic waves:
- Tsunami- a large sea wave generated by an underwater earthquake , volcano, landslide etc.
- Stress- causes faults and folts- plates move, they cause stress in the crust, which produces faults
- Fault- a break in the mass of rock along with which movement occurs
What is the formula for wavelength?
V=(lamda)(force)
What is the formula for Period?
Tau=1/f
What is a wave?
propagation or disturbances from place to place in a regular and organized way
What is amplitude?
the distance between a resting position and the maximum displacement of the wave from one surface to another
What is an earthquake?
this occurs when rocks between two or more tectonic plates accumulate energy and stress, leading to compression
