Physics - the dynamo effect + global warming Flashcards
What is the dynamo effect?
Moving a piece of wire between the poles of a magent, so that a voltage is created, or induced
Name three ways the size of the current in the dynamo effect is increased
stronger magnets used, more turns of the wire (creating a coil), or move the wire faster
State the three main greenhouse gases
Carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour
What is the first step of the greenhouse effect?
Shorter wavelength electromagnetic waves from the sun pass through the atmosphere
What is the second step of the greenhouse effect?
This radiation is absorbed by the Earth, which warms it. The Earth then emits longer wavelength infrared radiation
What is the third and final step of the greenhouse effect?
Gases from the atmosphere absorb the longer wavelength infrared radiation and this warms it up
What percentage of the greenhouse effect does water vapour account for?
50%
What percentage of the greenhouse effect does methane account for?
8%
What percentage of the greenhouse effect does carbon dioxide account for?
20%
Why is global warming so hard to measure?
Because there are climate variations every year
What do most scientists believe about global warming?
that humans are effecting it. Humans demand more and more energy to power their lives, which produces more carbon dioxide and adds to global warming
