Q

Do sounds travel faster in solids, liquids or gases?

A

The closer the particles are to each other, the faster the sound will travel. Therefore sounds travel fastest in solids, then in liquids

Q

How do sounds travel?

A

All sounds require a medium ( particles ) to travel through, therefore sounds cannot pass through a vacuum (such as space).

Q

What is wave energy?

A

Waves are a means of transferring energy this is done in a repeating cycle. The particles vibrate back and forth. There are two types of wave: transverse and longitudinal

Q

What happens in a transverse waves?

A

In a transverse wave, the vibrations occur at right angles to the direction of energy transfer.

Q

What happens in a longitudinal wave?

A

In a longitudinal wave, the vibrations occur in the same direction as the direction of energy transfer.

Q

What is a frequency?

A

All types of wave have a frequency.
This is a measure of how many waves pass a particular point every second.

Q

What Happens With Amplitude?

A

The louder the sound, the greater the amplitude.

The higher the pitch of the sound, the greater the frequency.

The higher the pitch, the lower the wavelength.

Frequency is linked to pitch, and amplitude is linked to loudness.

Amplitude is not affected by frequency or wavelength

Q

What sounds can humans hear?

A

Humans are only able to hear sounds within a certain range of frequencies. We are not able to hear sounds below 20Hz (subsonic), or sounds above 20000Hz (ultrasonic).
Other animals can hear different ranges of frequencies.
