Physics Test 4 Flashcards
reflection
the turning or the turning back of all or a part of a beam of light as it strikes a surface.
concave mirrors
curved away from the observer (inside of spoon)
convex mirrors
curved toward the observer (Christmas ornament)
real images
images formed by rays of light
virtual images
images that only appear to the eye to be formed by rays of light
refraction
the bending of light as it passes at an angle from one medium to another of different optical density
index of refraction
a measure of the optical density of a material. equal to the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the material
converging lenses
bend the light passing through them to some point beyond the lens. thicker in the center than on the edges
diverging lenses
bend the light passing through them so as to spread the light. thicker on the edges than in the center.
focal length
the distance between the principal focus of a mirror or lens and its vertex.
temperature
the quantity that indicates how warm or cold an object is relative to some standard
heat
the thermal energy transferred from one thing to another due to a temperature difference
thermodynamics
the study of thermal energy and its relationship with heat and work
first law of thermodynamics
when heat flows to or from a system, the system gains or loses an amount of energy equal to the amount of heat transferred.
second law of thermodynamics
heat never spontaneously flows from a cold substance to a hot substance
