Name the 3 types of heat transfer
Conduction Convection Radiation
Name a good conductor of heat
Metals e.g copper - because they have free electrons
Name an insulator
Plastics - Don’t have free electrons
How does conduction work?
Particles collide when vibrating and make other particles vibrate
Where does conduction take place
Solids and liquids - mainly solids
Where does convection take place
Liquids and gases
How does convection work
When liquid/gas gets heated the particles get more energy and speed up, this makes them spread apart which gives the liquid/gas more volume, making it less dense. The less dense things rise and the denser things sink.
