Physics Study Guide unit one Flashcards
what is the definition of a hypothesis?
educated guess, proposed reasoning OR proposed explanation experiments are used to test the Hypothesis
Can a hypothesis ever be completely proven through experiments?
No, a hypothesis can only: A) reject or B) fail to reject it.
BIG IDEA: there is not enough evidence to reject or prove the hypothesis.
Describe the difference between qualitative and quantitative measurement.
Qualitative: Measures the quality of something. It is subjective ex: feelings
Quantitative: Measures the quantity of something. It is NOT subjective ex: data
List the metric unite of length, mass, weight, time, volume, temperature.
length = Meter, m, Mass = Kilogram, kg, weight = newton, N, Time = Seconds, s, Volume: Liter, L, Temperature = degree Kelvin K …also Celsius C
list the English unit of length, mass, weight, time, volume and tempreture
Length= Foot, (ft.) Mass= slug or Pound Mass(lbmass), Weight= Pound or pound force(lbforce), Time = seconds, (s), Volume = Gallon, gal Temperature = degree Fahrenheit (F)
convert 340 ml to L
.340 L
state the definition of a reference point
also known as the origin. Often labeled zero
State the definition of position:
A location/spot with respect to an origin
State the definition of motion:
Changing position with respect to a reference point.
State the definition of speed:
Change in position with respect to time. Scalar, just a magnitude, NOT DIRECTION SPECIFIC
Write the equation form speed:
s=distance/time or s=d/t
what are some appropriate units of speed?
m/s,mph etc
Calculated speed if a distance of 400 m is traveled in 5 sec.
400m/5s = 80 m/s
write the equation for average speed:
Speed average = total distance covered/time
State the definition of velocity:
Change in position with respect to time. Vector magnitude and direction. V= Change x(position)/change t
