Physics ~ Sound Flashcards
Study for physics test
What is sound and how is it measured?
Sound is waves of vibrations ,made through a medium, that you can hear. It is measured in hertz.
What does sound travel in?
Waves
What are the two types of wavelengths and how are they different?
Transverse and longitudinal. Transverse is perpendicular, longitudinal is parallel
What do travelling sounds need?
A medium (e.g, air particles).
Sound travels fastest in… and why?
Solids as molecules in a solid medium are much closer together than those in a liquid or gas.
The louder the sound the…?
…higher the amplitude.
The higher the pitch…?
…The higher the frequency.
The higher the pitch…?
…The shorter wavelength.

What is convection?
Convection~ when heat is transferred by movement of heated fluid.
What is radiation?
Radiation~ Waves of infrared energy emitted from all objects that cant be seen.
Matte black is a…?
… a good absorb er
and emitter.
Shiny silver is a…
… a good reflector.
Name the parts of the ear that can be damaged by a
very loud sound?
Then ear drum, the auditory nerves, the hairs within the cochlea.
What does the word frequency mean?
The number of waves produced by a source that passes by a point per second Measured in hertz
Which part of the ear can be damaged by
continuous loud sound?
(ii) How might someone notice if this had happened?
The hairs within the cochlea. Distorted hearing high- pitched ringing within the ear
Why can you not hear things happening in space?
Space is a vacuum meaning there is no air or any type of matter for the sound to travel in
