Physics - Properties Of Magnets Flashcards

1
Q

North pole VS south pole

A

The north pole is the has the origin of the magnetic field with the flow of field lines moving from the north pole to the south pole of the magnet

Q

Hard magnetic materials Vs soft magnetic materials

A

Hard magnetic materials, whilst needing a stronger magnetic field to magnetise manage to retain their magnetic field for longer, this means that’s they are often used as permanent magnets. This contains materials such as iron alloys, nickel and cobalt.
Soft magnetic materials are much easier to magnetise so do not need as strong as a magnetic field to create but retain their magnetic field for a less time. These include iron

Q

What is an induced magnet?

A

Unlike a permanent magnet, induced magnets are only magnetic in the presence of a magnetic field. They are only attracted by other magnets, not repelled unlike permanent magnets. They lose all magnetism when they are removed from a magnetic field
