Physics Praxis Flashcards
What equation lets you determine the magnification of an image with a lens or mirror?
How is the focal point for a lens/mirror related to the distances for the object and the image?
The lens equation.
do is the distance for the object from the lens.
di is the distance for the image from the lens
f is the focal point for the lens/mirror.
A positive f indicated a converging lense and negative f indicates a diverging lens
Why does the sky apear blue?
When light strikes the atmosphere from the sun it is scattered by the molucules. Short wavelength (blue) light is scattered the most. Long wavelength (red) is scattered the least. Everything longer then blue is not scattered enough for you to see since it just continues straight(ish)
How do you calculate the vector cross product?
The mag(A) *mag(B) * sin(theta). It gives the value of a third vector that is orthogonal to the plane of the first 2 vectors.
What is the equation of position for SHM?
X=Asin(wt+phi)
How to calculate angular freq for SHM
w=sqrt(k/m)
What is kepler’s First Law?
The Law of Orbits: All planets move in elliptical orbits, with the sun at one focus.
What is Kepler’s Second Law?
The Law of Areas: A line that connects a planet to the sun sweeps out equal areas in equal times.
What is Kepler’s third Law?
The square of the period of any planet is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of its orbit.
Combine Centripetal force and Universal Gravitation for derivation
What is Pascal’s Law?
Pascal’s principle is defined as
A change in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted undiminished to all points in the fluid.
This principle is stated mathematically as:
deltaPressure=density*gravity*deltah
What is Archimedes principle?
Any body completely or partially submerged in a fluid (gas or liquid) at rest is acted upon by an upward, or buoyant, force the magnitude of which is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body. The volume of displaced fluid is equivalent to the volume of an object fully immersed in a fluid or to that fraction of the volume below the surface for an object partially submerged in a liquid. The weight of the displaced portion of the fluid is equivalent to the magnitude of the buoyant force.
How do you find the electric potential between 2 point charges?
Electric potential for a point charge is V=(k*Q)/r
It is a scalar quantity.
Include the sign of the charge with the equation.
What is capacitance?
How much charge per Volt can be stored either in a conductor or shared between two conducting surfaces. its unit is the Farad or Coulombs per volt.
C=Q/V
What does adding a dielectric do to a capacitor?
A dielectric will increase the capacitance. Some of the E field is consumed by the charges near to the conductors then they were before. With no battery this results in a drop in the voltage between the plate. With a batter this allows additional charge to be stored on the plates.
How do you calculate the capacitance of capacitors in series?
Capacitors in series act like resistors in parallel in terms of capacitance.
