physics p1 Flashcards
what is the law of conservation of energy
energy can be usefully trasfered, stored or dissapated but cannot be created or destroyed
what is kinetic energy
the energy stored in moving objects
what is elastic potential energy
a spring that is storing the energy used to stretch it.
what is gravitational potential energy
the energy stored in an object due to its position above earths surface
what is specific heat capacity
the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1 degree celcius
what is convection
when energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
what is conduction
conduction is the process where vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
what are the renewable energy sources
solar, tidal, wind, geothermal, bio-fuel, hydro-electricity, water waves
what are the non renewable resources
coal,oil,gas
how can we reduce unwanted heat escaping from our homes
wall cavity’s in between breezeblock and external wall, loft insulation, double glazed windows
what are the disadvantages of using wind turbines
they create noise pollution, unreliable if not windy, spoil the view, need a lot of turbines to generate a lot of power,
what are the advantages to wind turbines
they do not create any pollution, they do not permanently damage the landscape, minimal running costs and no fuel costs
what are the advantages of solar energy
running costs are very small no pollution, can be very reliable in sunny counties,
what are the disadvantages of solar energy
power produced on a small scale, cant increase the power output in high demand, very high initial set up costs
