Physics - Electricity Flashcards
What are the FEATURES of a SERIES CIRCUIT?
- If one component breaks, all the others will fail
- The current is the same everywhere in the circuit
- The more bulbs that are added to the circuit, the dimmer they will get
The MORE BULBS that are added to the circuit, the DIMMER they get.
WHY IS THIS?
The resistance becomes higher
What are the CHARACTERISTICS of a PARALLEL CIRCUIT?
- If one component breaks, the others will not fail
- The current splits evenly at each branch
- The total current of the branches is that of the main part of the circuit
- If you add more bulbs the current will stay bright
If you add MORE BULBS they will STAY at the SAME BRIGHTNESS.
WHY IS THIS?
- The current can flow more easily through multiple branches
- The charges have more directions to go in
What DANGERS can ELECTRICITY MISUSE CAUSE?
- Fires
- Burns
- Electrical shocks
What are the 3 COLOUR-CODED WIRES in CABLES called?
Live, neutral and earth wires
What COLOURS are the WIRES in a CABLE?
Earth - green and yellow
Live - brown
Neutral - blue
Which WIRE CONNECTS to the FUSE?
Live wire
Define AMMETER
Ammeter - measures the current
Define VOLTMETER
Voltmeter - Component that measures voltage, connects in parallel to the cell/battery
Define RESISTANCE
Resistance - more resistance lowers the current
Define AMPS
Amps (A) - what current is measured in
Define VOLTS
Volts (V) - what voltage is measured in
What are 3 SAFETY FEATURES in the WIRING of HOUSES?
- Fuses
- Circuit breakers
- Earth wire
Define FUSE
Fuse - blows when the current is to high
