Physics 8 Flashcards
What does electromagnetic spectrum mean?
The range of wavelengths or frequencies.
What does electromagnetic radiation mean?
A form of energy that is generated when electrically charged particles move through matter or a vacuum.
What is a wavelength?
The distance between two successive crests or troughs of a wave.
What is frequency?
The number of waves that pass a fixed place in a given amount of time.
What is amplitude?
The extent or range of a quality, property, process, or phenomenon.
What does reflection mean?
The return of light or sound waves from a surface.
What is refraction?
The bending of light or sound as it passes through something like a wall (sound) or a window (light).
What is absorption?
The reception of energy.
What does transmission mean?
The act of transferring something from one spot to another.
What does scattering mean?
A change in the direction of motion of a particle because of a collision with another particle.
What is an image?
That point, where the light rays coming from an object meet or appears to meet after reflection or refraction.
What are lenses?
A transmissive optical device that focuses or disperses light beams using refraction.
What are mirrors?
Reflective surface that does not allow the passage of light and instead bounces it off, thus producing an image.
What does translucent mean?
A substance allowing light, but not detailed shapes, to pass through; semi transparently.
What does transparent mean?
A substance allowing light to pass through so that objects behind can be distinctly seen.
