7
Q

Describe how fossil fuels are formed.

A
  • Plants and animals die
  • They are buried under mud so that they don’t rot
  • The mud changes to rock and the animal changes to oil or gas/ the plant changes to coal.

8
Q

Suggest some ways in which we can reduce the use of fossil fuels.

A
  • Use more RENEWABLE energy resources
  • Use efficient appliances
  • Walk, cycle etc on short journeys
  • Use less energy on heating rooms (wear warmer clothing)

9
Q

What does ‘efficiency’ mean?

A

Efficiency is a way of saying how much of the energy transferred is useful. An efficient appliance DOES NOT WASTE ENERGY

13
Q

What is the difference between mass and weight?

A

Mass is how much stuff something is made of, weight is how much force is acting upon something.

14
Q

What is the equation used to find weight?

A

Weight = mass x gravitational field strength
Gravitational field strength on Earth = 10 N/Kg
SO…
Weight = mass x 10

Q

What are elastic and plastic materials?

A
Elastic = a material/object THAT RETURNS to its original shape when a force is taken of it. Eg. a spring
Plastic = a material/object THAT DOES NOT RETURN to its original shape when a force is taken of it. Eg. plastercine

16
Q

Describe how pressure depends on force and area.

A

The bigger the area the smaller the pressure, the smaller the area the bigger the pressure.
The bigger the force the bigger the pressure, ehe smaller the force the smaller the pressure.

17
Q

What is the equation used to find pressure?

A

Pressure = force ÷ area

18
Q

What is current?

A

The current is the flow of charge around a circuit. It DOES NOT get used up.

19
Q

How do you measure current?

A

Using an Ammeter

20
Q

Name some conductors and insulators of electricity.

A
Conductors = metals
Insulators = plastics
21
Q

Explain how switches work and how they can control the circuit.

A

Switches break and complete the circuit depending on whether they are open or closed. If a switch in a series circuit is closed nothing will work because the circuit will not be complete.

22
Q

What is the difference between series and parallel circuits?

A

In a series circuit all switches have to be closed for anything to work, however, in a parolee circuit there are 2 loops so only 1 has to be complete to switch certain things on.

23
Q

Why are parallel circuits used?

A

So that in houses you can switch on only the ones you want on and you don’t have to have all of them on.
