Physics Flashcards
What is friction?
2 surfaces rubbing together
What is speed?
Distance traveled per unit of time
What is the formula for speed?
Speed=Distance/time
What is inertia?
An objects resistance
What are balanced forces?
When all forces acting on an object are equal-a net force of 0
What are unbalanced forces?
When all forces acting on an object are unequal
What is acceleration?
Speeding up
What is deceleration?
Slowing down
What is Newton’s first law?
Law of Inertia, an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
An object at rest will remain unless acted on by an outside force.
If a ball is thrown in outer space and no force is acting on it, it will travel at the same speed and direction forever.
What is Newton’s second law?
Force=mass*acceleration
(Acceleration=force/mass)
If mass is doubled and force is the same, the acceleration decrease by half
If mass is tripled and force is the same, acceleration decreases by 1/3
4N of mass on 2kg=4N/2kg=2m/s2
4N of mass on 4kg =4N/4kg=1m/s2
4N of mass on 6kg=4N/6kg=0.66m/s2
What is Newton’s third law?
Action/reaction
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
.shoes push on the floor and the floor pushes back
.tires push on the road and the road pushes back on the tires
What are the units for speed?
Meters per second
Meters per minute
Miles per hour
What safety features reduce the forces on the body when a person is in an accident? How do they lessen the force acting on the body?
Airbags-spreads out force and decelerates the body
Seat belts-decelerate the body
Would a smaller or taller block have more stability?
The smaller one because it has a lower center of mass
Braking distance, car a is moving 2x faster than car B
You need to double the breaking distance when the car is 2x faster
