Physics Flashcards
Definition of vacuum
Is where there is no air
What do dark colours do ?
Absorb light and heat
What do light colours do ?
Reflect light and heat
What are waves
Something that transfers energy
What are transverse waves
Visible waves eg radiation
What is lateral inversion
A plane mirror reflects light regularly so that it produces a clear image which is the same size
What happens when light passes an object of one density into another
Its refracted as the light slows down or speeds up
How is density defined
By the amount of particles in it
If the wave travels from a less dense object to a dense object
What does it do ?
Slows down
If the wave travels from a more dense object to a less object
What does it do ?
It speeds up
Definition of refraction
Is when light bends
Definition of reflection
When light bounces back
What does a wavelength have
1 peak
1 trough
Definition of Diffraction
As white light travels through a prism the light bends in different directions creating rainbows because white light is made up of 7 colours
What happens when two waves together
If they have the same amplitude they construct a new wave
Definition of superposition
When two waves meet either creating a new wave or cancelling out eachother
Definition of destructive
when a peak and trough collide they go flat as they cancel eachother if they change
What is dispersion
When a ray of light goes through a prism, the prism splits a ray of white light into the colours dont change
What does it mean when light isnt reflected
It has been absorbed
Why cant we hear in space ?
There are not enough particles and atoms for sound to vibrate and bounce
High frequence =
High pitch
Low frequency =
Low pitched
High amplitude =
Louder
Low amplitude =
Quieter
