Physics 3.2.1 Flashcards
Define ‘Internal Energy’:
The Total Energy Stores inside a System by the Particles that make up the System, due to their Motion and Positions.
What Stores do the Molecules/ Particles within a Substance have Energy in and why? (2)
-Kinetic Energy Store- Due to their Random Motion/ Vibration.
-Potential Energy Store- Due to their Position Relative to each other.
What happens to the Kinetic Energy Store in a System when you Heat it up?
It Increases.
What happens when a Substance reaches a certain Temperature? (2)
-Energy will stop being Transferred to the KE Store of the Molecules/ Particles.
-Energy will now be Transferred to the Potential Energy Store of the Molecules/ Particles instead.
When the Potential Energy Store of Molecules/ Particles Increases/ Decreases enough, what will Occur?
A Change of State.
When a Substance Changes its State, the Potential Energy of the M/P Increases. What does this allow the M/P to do?
It allows them to overcome the Intermolecular Forces of Attraction.
During the Process of Changing State, the Substance will remain the same ___.
Temperature.
