Physics Flashcards
what is the definition of speed?
How fast you are going
what is the definition of velocity?
how fast you are going, in a given direction.
what is acceleration?
how quickly the velocity is changing.
what is the formula for acceleration?
acceleration = change in velocity / time taken
what is gravitational force?
the force of attraction between all masses
what is the acceleration of gravity on earth?
10 m/s squared
what is mass?
mass is the amount of stuff in an object- how heavier something is..
what is weight?
weight is the pull of the gravitational force
what is the formula relating mass, weight and gravity?
weight = mass x gravitational field strength
what is mass, weight and gravitational field strengths units?
mass = kg weight= Newtons GFS= N/Kg
what is the resultant force?
the overall force on a point or object
how do you find the resultant force?
subtract the smaller number away from the bigger one.
what happens if there is no resultant force?
the object is moving at a constant velocity
what happens when there is a non zero resultant force?
the object is accelerating in the direction of the force,
when two objects interact the forces they exert on each other are…?
equal and opposite.
what is friction?
friction is between two surfaces in contact which slows things down.
what is terminal velocity?
the force of gravity is much more than the frictional force when the object set off, so they accelerate, after this the frictional force begins to balance with the gravity. this reduces the acceleration and once the frictional force is equal to the gravitational force the object will not accelerate anymore .. it has therefore reached its terminal velocity.
what is the two main factors that affect thinking distance?
1) how fast your going
2) how dopey you are ( affected by alcohol, tiredness, drugs or careless attitude)
what is the four main factors affecting breaking distance?
1) how fast you’re going
2) how good your brakes are
3) how good your tyres are
4) how good the grip is (dependant on the weather, road surface and tyres)
what happens when a force moves an object through a distance?
energy is transferred and work is done
what is kinetic energy?
energy of movement
what does the kinetic energy of something depend on?
mass and speed.
