Physics Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
A quantity that only has a magnitude
- Temperature, mass, distance, speed
What is a vector quantity?
A quantity that has both magnitude and direction.
- Acceleration, displacement, velocity.
What is a force?
A push or pull acting on an object due to an interaction with another object
What are two categories that forces can be split into?
Contact forces - friction, air resistance
Non-contact forces - Electrostatic, magnetic
What is the gravitational field strength?
9.8N/kg
What is meant by the centre of mass?
The single point where an objects wight can be considered to act through.
What is the name for the turning effect of a force?
The moment
If an object is said to be in equilibrium what can be said about the moments acting on the object?
The clockwise moments are equal to the anticlockwise moments.
